What Conservatives Ignore About Wealth

by Ted Manolatos on October 31, 2011

man with moneyThe Occupy movement is spreading nationwide by the day. People of all walks of life are joining the movement's call to reign in out of control capitalism. Conservatives are bent on marginalizing members of the Occupy group as hippies and druggies and anything else negative they can find to say.

If there was ever class warfare in text book terms it is now. People are tired and frustrated with a capitalist system that rewards and favors the wealthy few and big business at the expense of everybody else. There is no doubt, protesters have valid arguments and conservatives are bent on dodging the truth.

The distribution of wealth in America as at an all time extreme. The top ten percent of the population in America in 2000 held almost 70 percent of the wealth clocking in at 69.8 percent. Today it is almost certain that figure has grown or at least remained close to the same. What that figure means is that only 30 percent of the wealth in America is held by 90% of the population.

us wealth distribution verses optimum wealth distribution

Sure conservatives will given their mantra that the wealthiest people create jobs and that their wealth trickle downs but the fact is that it does not. Conservatives constantly try to obscure the realities of wealth inequality with smoke and mirrors but the statistics do not lie.

Income distribution in 2006 is a classic example of the inequality facing all Americans. Twenty percent of the population received 61.4 percent of all income. The top 1% received more than 21.3 percent up from 15.7 percent in 1991. The top 20 percent of the population in America control 85 percent or more of the wealth in America.

The other 80 percent have access to 15 percent or less of the wealth and if one divides that up, the lowest two quintiles (the last two income groups of five groups) control a measly 0.3 percent of wealth. Surely conservatives will go out of their way to discount these real statistics trying to distract attention from the truth like they and Fox News are trying to do with the protesters.

us wealth distribution 2007

Conservative simply refuse to face the music about the wealth distribution and the way too small percentage of the population that control all the nation's wealth. Conservatives always find excuses to marginalize the capitalist reality of America today. Conservatives refuse to acknowledge anything is wrong and that any efforts should be made to fix it.

To conservatives, the status quo is fine and rich people should be able to hoard all the nations wealth at the expense of the 80-90 percent of the rest of us. It is their mantra that free market rewards are fine in-spite of gross exploits of the rest of us.

Sadly to say conservatives seem brain dead, ignorant or just plain selfish when it comes to excluding nearly 80 or 90 percent or more of the population from the fruits of labor and free market. Conservatives accuse anyone who addresses these issues as trying to engage in class war when in fact the war was started by the haves who are exploiting everybody -the have-nots.

America should have a more even distribution of wealth that ensures everybody has some piece of the pie. Government should if necessary, pass laws that redistribute wealth in a way that ensures all Americans have a more equal footing.

Any nation that refuses to address its inequalities is destine to face the wrath of its people at some point in time like we are seeing with the Occupy movement. People are tired of a weighted deck against them. People are tired of not being able to achieve some semblance of equality in the market place of wealth.
